The Compression Vest Aids in Healing

Some San Francisco Bay Area men express concern, at the time of their consultation, about the requirement of wearing a compression vest after their gynecomastia surgery. They have heard the vest can be bulky and uncomfortable.

Dr. Delgado, a Board Certified Plastic Surgeon, who has specialized in gynecomastia since 1989, explains the necessity of the compression vest for proper healing. Although the vest may cause temporary discomfort, it plays an important role in the healing process. There are several advantages the vest provides including:
• Helping the skin contract
• Increasing the blood flow
• Preventing fluid collection
• Helping to control the amount of swelling
• Decreasing post-operative pain
• Aiding the chest tissues in binding together

New Vest Design Gives Relief

Understanding his male breast reduction patient’s reluctance to wear a compression vest, Dr. Delgado made it his mission to design a vest that would make the healing period more comfortable. His unique design has pockets for the drain bulbs. The pockets are detached when the drains are removed. Then there is a second vest that men graduate to that is thinner with a soft t-shirt type lining and has compression only over the chest area. These thinner vests are very popular with Dr. Delgado’s patients. Men who wear dress shirts do not complain about the vest being visible. The custom vests come in black and white.

Wearing the Vest 24/7

It is necessary to wear the vest for six weeks, only removing it for showering. It is recommended to have a second vest so that you have one while the other is being laundered. The vest needs to be worn snug, but not too tight. Once the six week period is up, men can return to normal activities.
