Asymmetry and the Gynecomastia Patient

Gynecomastia is caused when excess estrogen gets stored in the male body which then leads to breast development.

Male Breasts May be Asymmetric

Usually, when a man develops gynecomastia, the breasts are relatively equal in shape and size. However, it is not uncommon for one breast to develop and be larger than the other. In rare cases, it is possible for only one breast to develop. Asymmetry causes men to feel even more self-conscious than men with enlargement on both sides.

This 43 year old man had liposuction in 1992 for his gynecomastia with another surgeon but was not satisfied with the results. Dr. Delgado performed revision surgery, consisting of suction-assisted lipectomy and glandular excision of the chest. Total fat extraction was 350cc from the right side and 375cc from the left to correct his asymmetry.

Some asymmetry is normal, but when it becomes very noticeable, it can be the cause of much embarrassment and shame.

Asymmetry is Corrected by Surgery

The only way to correct asymmetry is by surgery with a gynecomastia specialist. The surgery entails liposuction, surgical excision of the breast tissue with the goal of a masculine contoured chest.

Sometimes asymmetry can occur during male breast reduction surgery by unseen complications or lack of skill by the surgeon. A secondary surgery will be necessary for correction, be sure to choose your surgeon carefully! The patient will need to wait about 6 months before revision surgery can take place.

Dr. Delgado’s Revision Surgery on the Rise

Dr. Miguel Delgado, M.D. states that about 40% of his gynecomastia practice is made up of revision surgery where patients had their surgery done elsewhere. Most revision cases are correction of too much tissue removed (crater deformity) or not enough tissue removed, along with asymmetry.

Gynecomastia Discussed on the Nip/Tuck Talk Show

Nip/Tuck Interviews Miguel Delgado, M.D.

No More Man Boobs!

Michele Garber interviewed Miguel Delgado, M.D. for almost an hour on her Nip/Tuck Talk show. The discussion addresses the frustrating and humiliating condition known as gynecomastia. Ms. Garber’s in-depth interview covers causes and surgical options for men of all ages.

What You Need to Know About Gynecomastia

1. What is the best age for surgery?
2. Can enlarged male breasts come back?
3. Are there non-surgical options?
4. What are the risks of steroid use?
5. When will liposuction alone not work?
6. When is it recommended to see an endocrinologist?

California Board Certified Gynecomastia Specialist Explains

“Many young men may find that their male boobs are still present well after puberty,” states Miguel Delgado, M.D. However, the younger males have the best gynecomastia surgical outcome due to the good elasticity of their skin. Many men find they develop breasts as they age or gain weight. Dr. Delgado warns of the risks caused by different types of drugs and steroids.

To hear answers to these topics and many others, you can listen to the interview in its entirety here: http://niptucktalk.com/podcast/category/treatments-for-gynecomastia.

CoolSculpting for Pseudo-Gynecomastia

CoolSculpting Logo

San Francisco, CA-Pseudo-gynecomastia is man boobs that are caused by fat alone. True gynecomastia is a combination of fat and breast tissue. As discussed in previous blogs, true gynecomastia must be treated by a combination of surgical excision of the breast tissue with liposuction of the fat. Many surgeons try unsuccessfully to remove true gynecomastia with liposuction alone causing revision surgery for many men; in fact, Dr. Delgado’s gynecomastia surgery is now up to 40% redo surgeries of this type. It is, therefore, highly recommended that men seek out the best top plastic cosmetic surgeon that specializes in gynecomastia to avoid needing a “redo” of their surgery. Revision gynecomastia surgery is more difficult because now there is scar tissue from the original surgery and in most cases the skin will have lost some of its elasticity.

For the man with pseudo-gynecomastia, liposuction can give great results and is a much less invasive procedure than surgical excision.

Now, Dr. Delgado has an even less invasive procedure than liposuction for pseudo-gynecomastia, in fact, it is a non-surgical procedure that does not involve needles, scalpels, scars or even any downtime!

Available now at Dr. Delgado’s “Non-Surgical Center of Excellence” is CoolSculpting, where other non-invasive treatments such as Ultherapy, PhotoFacial and more are offered.

CoolSculpting is a process where an applicator sucks an area of fat between two cooling panels and applies intense coldness. The fat cells are destroyed by the coldness without harming the surrounding muscles and tissue and then the dead fat cells are eliminated from the body naturally. The entire process lasts about an hour and many patients read a book, work on laptops or take a nap. Patients state that the treatment is not painful, but initially they feel pressure and coldness from the plates. The results are not evident immediately as the shedding of the fat cells is a process that takes time. The results from the treatment are first evident after 2 to 3 weeks, with continuing results for up to 2 to 4 months, at which time a secondary treatment can be done if desired.

CoolSculpting is an excellent treatment for smaller areas of fat that normally are hard to target with diet and exercise. Men with pseudo-gynecomastia may be excellent candidates for fat reducing of their moobs. Other areas that are popular are the love handles, and abdomen.

There are very few risks involved with CoolSculpting; redness, some bruising and temporary numbness, are noted with most patients returning to all activities shortly after the procedure.

It is important to note that CoolSculpting can be repeated to obtain the desired outcome, but it is not meant to treat large areas of fat. Liposuction remains a more effective procedure for the patient with larger amounts of fat to be removed.

For the man with pseudo-gynecomastia, CoolSculpting is an exciting possibility for an alternative treatment to liposuction. It is important to remember, most men have true gynecomastia, which means surgical excision will be needed for the removal of breast tissue for the best result. Sometimes it can be difficult to determine how much breast tissue versus fat is on the male chest. It is recommended that the gynecomastia patient schedule a consultation with Dr. Delgado to determine the best course of treatment for ultimate results and to determine the gynecomastia costs. It is possible for the male breast reduction patient to schedule a combination of procedures to save time and expenses.  Call Today  415-898-4161 or email.

“Young Men With Gynecomastia, How to Ask for Help From Your Parents”

Boy talking to parents - photo

San Francisco, CA-It is hoped that young boys or men that have developed male breasts also known as gynecomastia, man boobs, and moobs will find this blog to help them understand what is happening.

Up to 65% of males will have detectable breast development by the age of 14, most likely caused by an imbalance of sex hormones. This is a normal condition brought on by puberty when the body starts to go through changes. You are not turning into a girl, you do not have cancer, you are normal!

Do you try to hide your chest with loose fitting shirts? Do you try to avoid taking your shirt off for gym? Do you avoid swimming? Are you embarrassed to let your parents know? You are not alone, there are many young men quietly suffering the same way you are.

Bullying has become prevalent in schools these days, and boys that have developed breasts are a great target for cruel nicknames that can cause self-hatred and isolation. It is important to understand that gynecomastia or the male breast is a benign (harmless) condition even though it is socially lethal!

The good news is that for most boys, 90% to 95% the condition will go away by itself without any type of treatment, within a few weeks to 2 years. But two years for a young man can feel like eternity, what can you do in the meantime? Getting emotional support from your family or other sources can be a great benefit.

First, check out a website called gynecomastia.org, there you will find many guys that are sharing stories of how they have suffered and what they have done about it. This is a website dedicated to getting out information on gynecomastia and support from other members through the discussion boards. You do need to sign up and become a member to have access to all the site has to offer, but there is no charge. Review the stories that have been posted such as this one “A Mother’s Story”. Notice at the end of this story that the Mother recommends that you tell your parents, as difficult as this may be; they probably have no idea that you are suffering and most parents will do whatever it takes to spare their sons this type of humiliation. Try to talk to your parents, they may be much more understanding than you realize.

If the idea of talking to your parents is just impossible for you, try composing an email telling them how miserable you have been with a link to the above letter, and a link to gynecomastia.org. There are many stories posted of parents who discover their child has been suffering, and they were completely unaware! For example, another story tells of a boy who finally went to his father and asked if the money that had been saved for him for college could be used instead for male breast reduction surgery. The father was beyond shocked to find out his son had been dealing with a situation he knew nothing about, and he had never even heard of the term gynecomastia before. The father was able to get a line of credit to cover the cost of gynecomastia treatment, and his son was still able to go to college. The surgery proved to be a life changing event for his son.

Adolescent Gynecomastia

This is an 18 year old male who presents with adolescent gynecomastia. He complained about having “fluffy nipples”. His goal was to flatten the nipples to look more natural in his clothing. He had suction assisted liposuction with glandular excision. His post surgical recovery displays his newly flattened nipples.

As mentioned earlier, most boys will find the male breasts will go away on their own within a few weeks to a couple of years. If they do not, there are different surgical treatments available depending on the severity of the case.

Unless you have “pseudo-gynecomastia”, be wary of a surgeon that claims liposuction alone will give you the result you want. True gynecomastia consists of breast tissue and fat, liposuction will only get rid of fat, breast tissue is much denser and needs to be removed by surgical excision. Whereas pseudo-gynecomastia is caused by fat alone and can get great results with liposuction or weight loss.

In searching for information on the internet be careful about ads that claim you can take a pill to get rid of moobs. Save your money they do not work as attested to by many men on gynecomastia.org.

It would be wise to see a top cosmetic Board Certified Plastic Surgeon who specializes in gynecomastia surgery with your parents, to find out what your options are, and how likely the male breasts will go away on their own. Dr. Delgado stays abreast of all new innovations in plastic surgery such as “CoolSculpting” for fat removal which is now available at the “Non-Surgical Center of Excellence” at his Marin County location.

Will Liposuction Get Rid of Moobs?

 Liposuction and Gynecomastia Treatment

Before and After Liposuction and Gynecomastia Treatment

Before and After Gynecomastia Surgery

This question is asked frequently by San Francisco Bay Area men, and the answer is; rarely will liposuction alone get rid of man boobs. True gynecomastia is a combination of fat and breast tissue. Liposuction will only effectively remove fat. Breast tissue is too dense to go through a cannula.

Liposuction Treats pseudogynecomastia

There are many surgeons who attempt to remove moobs by liposuction alone, they leave behind the breast tissue which now without the surrounding fat may be even more apparent.   I would say that 35% to 40% of my male breast reduction cases are “redo” surgeries where the original surgeon used liposuction alone. This presents a more difficult “redo” surgery because now there is scar tissue making dissection more difficult and the skin may have lost much of its elasticity. This is especially frustrating for the patient who will have to go through another surgery involving more expense and recovery time and maybe not the result that could have been obtained if breast tissue had been excised in the original surgery.   There are instances when liposuction is a great tool, but mostly it should be used for touch up procedures, to extract and/or inject fat. In the rare case where the male breast is caused by fat alone, liposuction may be very effective. This is not considered “true gynecomastia” however; it is referred to as “pseudo-gynecomastia”.  In many cases, pseudo-gynecomastia can be reversed with weight loss if the skin has not been overly stretched.   In order to avoid needing a “redo” surgery, be sure to find a Board Certified Plastic Surgeon that specializes in gynecomastia surgery. Look at the surgeons before and after photos, and ask questions as to the method of surgery to be used.

What is Gynexin and Will it Work?

Gynexin is a widely advertised product that claims to get rid of the gynecomastia breast. The product, which comes in pill form, is a herbal based supplement that alleges it can reduce the size and quantity of the fat cells in the male breast.

The main ingredient Chromium Picolinate is used in many diet supplements and some studies support the fact that it can act as a “fat burner”. There are other studies that refute this claim, which leaves the effect of Chromium Picolinate unsubstantiated. The University of Maryland Medical Center warns that taking Chromium Picolinate for fat reduction could interfere with several medications including antacids and diabetes medications.

In addition to the Chromium Picolinate, Gynexin has a proprietary herbal blend. See the insert. Be sure to read the company’s guarantee, note that in order to get a refund you must return the item unopened, and they charge a 20% restocking fee.

Does it make sense that if the product worked how does it just target the male chest? The biggest concern is that the claim is only for reducing the fat cells. This would only benefit those who have “pseudo-gynecomastia” which is caused by fat alone. Unfortunately, pseudo gynecomastia makes up only a small percent of those suffering with the condition. True gynecomastia, in most cases, is a combination of fat and breast tissue. Male breast tissue can only be removed by gynecomastia surgery.

Some San Francisco Bay Area men may be tempted to try this product, if so do your homework, Google “Gynexin reviews” be sure they are actual reviews and not affiliated with the company.

Controlling Gynecomastia with Diet/Exercise and Medication?

FACT OR FICTION

There has been some discussion on gynecomastia.org recently regarding diet, exercise and medications and whether or not it will help the gynecomastia breast, also referred to as “moobs”. I would like to address these issues from my perspective.  In terms of diet and exercise, diet will definitely alter the fat content of the male breasts.  Gynecomastia is composed of glandular tissue and fatty tissue.  The fatty tissue can be altered by diet and exercise; however, the glandular tissue will not be affected.  Exercise will help with the development of the pectoralis in terms of making it more bulky orman on treadmill - pic enhancing its definition.  This will not alter gynecomastia except pushing it more outward.

In terms of drugs and medication, there has been a lot of false advertising regarding drugs and pills over the internet, stating that they will enhance the removal of gynecomastia.  There is no scientific evidence to support these claims, there are no pills or drugs available to reduce gynecomastia.  However, drugs that help weight reduction will reduce the overall fat content in the body and in the chest as well, but, as I said earlier, not the glandular component.  If one is going through adolescence and one’s hormones are off balance, it is possible that an endocrinologist can possibly adjust them during the early developmental stages.  However, once the gynecomastia is established, past puberty and the teenage years, usually it does not resolve. Even action heroes, such as Tom Cruise can develop “man boobs”.

In a good portion of boys with gynecomastia in puberty, it will go away in many cases on its own; therefore, often times we advise patients to wait until the end of puberty unless it is a severe case or has significant psychological issues. For some patients with a milder case, they may be a candidate for the “Light Procedure“. For more information, go to gynecomastiaspecialiast or Dr. Delgado’s website. Dr. Delgado sees patients for consultations at his Bay Area offices, in San Francisco and  Marin county.
